Over 200 Years of Dedication, Innovation, and Community Protection
The Rochester Police Department (RPD) was established in 1817 following the founding of Rochesterville by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester. The department's origins began with the appointment of a constable and the formation of a night watch. By 1819, the village had raised funds to maintain this night watch, marking the official beginning of the police force.
The department adopted various innovations, such as the Bertillon System for identifying criminals in 1903 and the introduction of a radio communication system in patrol cars in 1931. The RPD has continued to adapt to the changing needs of the community, including the development of traffic management and crime control strategies.
Today, the RPD serves over 210,500 residents and employs around 850 sworn and non-sworn personnel. The department is committed to fair law enforcement and improving community quality of life, while maintaining a strong tradition of service excellence. The RPD celebrated its 200th Anniversary in 2019, marking a significant milestone in its history. The department honors its fallen officers, with 16 having died in the line of duty, our most recent fallen officer being Anthony Mazurkiewicz in July 2022.
